Some photographs are about beauty.
Some are about memory.
And some are about meaning.

Celebrating The Sober Butterfly Collective
This image was created for a competition, but more importantly, it was created to celebrate a woman and a community that has quietly changed lives — including my own.
The subject of this image is my friend Hannah, founder of the Sober Butterfly Collective. Hannah created this organisation to support people living an alcohol-free lifestyle — not from a place of judgement, but from compassion, understanding, and connection.
The Sober Butterfly Collective is about growth, transformation, and finding freedom in choosing a different path. It’s a space where people are seen, supported, and reminded that they are not alone. Like a butterfly, it represents shedding an old version of yourself and emerging into something lighter, truer, and more aligned.
I have found people in the community with similar interests to me and being able to meet up for social events where alcohol isn’t the main factor is so wonderful and very refreshing!…(especially the cold water dips!..)
Being able to collaborate with Hannah on this image felt incredibly special. This wasn’t just a portrait — it was a shared story.

The Image: Transformation and Freedom
We wanted the final image to feel powerful but gentle. Strong, yet hopeful.
A visual representation of growth, freedom, and self-trust.
The concept behind the photograph centres on reinvention — discarding an old version of yourself to uncover the person beneath. It speaks to the quiet strength it takes to change, and the courage required to live differently in a world that often celebrates excess.
Why I Love Creating Photographs With a Message
As a photographer, I’m deeply drawn to creating images that say something — photographs that invite reflection, spark conversation, or make someone feel seen.
Photography has the power to tell stories without words. To hold emotion. To honour lived experience.
Working on projects like this reminds me why I do what I do. It’s not just about light and composition — it’s about connection, intention, and using creativity to reflect real human journeys.
Gratitude
I’m endlessly grateful to Hannah for trusting me with her story, and for creating a community that supports so many people living alcohol-free lives with courage and grace.
This image is a celebration — of transformation, of choice, and of the beauty that can come from living authentically.
Thank you to The Guild of Photographers for awarding our little project 🙂
