WHAT TO WEAR FOR A PHOTOSHOOT

In The Studio

Simple, timeless outfit tips to help you feel confident and look amazing in your photos.

If you’ve just booked a photoshoot (or you’re thinking about it – exciting!), one of the most common questions I get asked is: “What should I wear for my photos?”

The answer? Keep it simple, timeless, and true to you.

Whether you’re planning a maternity sessionfamily photoshoot, or newborn portraits with your little one, what you wear plays a big part in how your final images look and feel.

So here are my top tips for choosing the perfect outfit for your photoshoot!

1. Stick to Soft Neutrals – You Can’t Go Wrong

Creams, whites, beige and soft greys always look beautiful on camera. They reflect light softly onto the skin, give a clean, classic feel, and help your expressions (not your outfit) take centre stage. These colours are perfect for newborn sessions or light-filled maternity portraits.

If you’re dressing the whole family, choosing outfits in similar neutral shades creates a cohesive and elegant look across the photos.

2. Jeans and a Black Top – The Underrated Classic

You really can’t beat a pair of jeans and a black top. It’s a combination that’s stood the test of time. It’s simple, flattering, and lets your personality shine without distractions. This works especially well for studio-style portraits and is also a great option if you’re feeling a little unsure about what suits you.

3. Think in Colour Tones, Not Matchy-Matchy

Instead of trying to match everyone in the exact same colour, think in tones. A family wearing soft blues and greys looks effortlessly coordinated. Or go a little warmer with rich browns, rusts, and deep oranges – gorgeous in autumn sessions and cosy home shoots.

Staying within one colour family creates harmony without looking too staged or uniform.

4. Avoid Logos, Characters and Loud Patterns

As fun as your little one’s Peppa Pig jumper might be, big logos, characters, and busy patterns can really distract from the emotion and connection in your photos.

Instead, choose plain fabrics – they’re flattering, timeless, and don’t fight for attention. Small textures (like knits or linen) can add depth without being overpowering.

5. Comfort is Key

No matter what you choose, make sure you feel comfortable and confident in it. If you’re tugging at your sleeves or adjusting a neckline throughout the shoot, it’ll show in the final images.

If you’re unsure, bring a couple of options – I’m always happy to help you decide what will photograph best!

Final Thoughts

The best outfits for your photoshoot are the ones that make you feel like you – just a little elevated. Keep things simple, coordinated, and classic, and you’re guaranteed to love the results for years to come.

Still unsure? When you book a session with me at Luminosa Photography, I’m always happy to offer personalised styling guidance. I’ve got plenty of inspiration (and even a client wardrobe for some sessions!) to make things easy.
